imac cannibalizes itself and network shares after ARD session

We use DeployStudio to image the 14 imacs in our operations center with a 'blessed' image. A few members of my team remotely connect with Apple Remote Desktop to these imacs in our operations center via VPN. All machines are running High Sierra 10.13.3 and accounts are managed by Active Directory. We had several shares running on a SAN mounted via samba to the imacs. These shares were also shared by a Linux VM where the bulk of our work is performed.

We have had several mysterious episodes of an imac crashing during a Apple Remote Session and rebooting to find the HD image gone and in its place is either a very old image or completely nothing on the HD except maybe the RecoveryHD. Also, the files from the attached network shares are deleted. Team members logged into our central linux server see the files disappear before their eyes until we finally got our SA to shut the system down. We thought it was some weird samba bug so we separated the linux drive completely and now have a NAS nfs mounted both the linux server and imacs. But we experienced again 2 more times regardless if the NAS was mounted. However, files again disappeared when it was mounted during one of these crashes. Thank goodness for backups!

I don't know too much about DeployStudio, but could DeployStudio have been inadvertently set up to automatically re-image the imac after a crash?
We need to find root cause and we are running out of time and ideas!

Thank you!
