NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

Here is my setup:
Server:
Mac mini Server (Late 2012)
macOS Sierra 10.12.6
Server 5.3.1
DeployStudio Admin 1.7.8
16 GB RAM
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
2 x 256 GB SSD

Client:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
4 GB RAM
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
128 GB SSD

Situation:
Netboot is setup and working on the server. I have a NetBoot image of DeployStudio for macOS 10.12.6 and another of DeployStudio for macOS 10.13.0. Both of these NetBoot just fine.

I am trying to create a NetBoot of DeployStudio for macOS 10.13.3. The NetBoot image is created on a fresh install of macOS 10.13.3 with all applicable updates for the OS. Only DeployStudio Admin is installed and used to create the NetBoot image. I have attempted to create the NetBoot image several times but it always fails to boot every time. I even tried to create a bootable USB drive and the same thing happened.

Symptoms:
NetBoot image of macOS 10.13.3 with DeployStudio 1.7.8 results in unknown error when booting causing a reboot to occur during the boot process. The desktop wallpaper does not display nor does DeployStudio.
Bootable USB drive created with macOS 10.13.3 with DeployStudio 1.7.8 results in unknown error when booting causing a reboot to occur during the boot process. Again, the desktop wallpaper does not display nor does DeployStudio.

Re: NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

Some more testing. I just attempted to NetBoot a plain macOS 10.13.3 image. I redownloaded a fresh install of the Install macOS High Sierra application from the Apple App Store. I used System Image Utility to create a NetBoot Image of the Install macOS High Sierra application. The computers I have tested this on still do not boot properly with the image. I have tested on the client laptop listed above, and an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015). They not reboot during the boot process. I get a gray screen with the Apple logo and the progress line slowly going across. I left the test computers for an hour but they still don't boot all the way. I'm going to try one more time using the Apple Automator workflow to build yet another NetBoot image before calling Apple.

Re: NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

I think I have it figured out.It's about the language when you configure a new netboot set.Do make sure the language has been selected,Do not choose "CURRENT" as default.

Re: NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

THAT DID IT! LONGGEGENO1, THANK YOU!

I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out. Going back and fourth between DS and System Image Utility. Sometimes the NBI from SIU would work, and the very next reboot it would fail. My test system is still the Client MacBook Pro listed above. When you mentioned the language, I realized that I have been keeping it set to "Current" and not changing it to English. After switching it to English, is was able to boot a DS NBI image. However, when I did set it to English, the keyboard layout switched to AZERTY. I needed to replace the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.HIToolbox.plist. Specifically, I needed to add the following to the com.apple.HIToolbox.plist:

    <key>AppleCurrentKeyboardLayoutInputSourceID</key>
    <string>com.apple.keylayout.US</string>
    <key>AppleInputSourceHistory</key>
    <array>
        <dict>
            <key>InputSourceKind</key>
            <string>Keyboard Layout</string>
            <key>KeyboardLayout ID</key>
            <integer>0</integer>
            <key>KeyboardLayout Name</key>
            <string>U.S.</string>
        </dict>
    </array>

Re: NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

Thanks for these tips, I now have a working netboot set for APFS images; the only issue is that I can no longer control machines remotely. Does anyone know how that can be achieved with a High Sierra-based netboot image? I don't have that issue with my Sierra-based image.

Cheers!

Re: NetBoot for 10.13.3 Rebooting before loaded

Of course, while working, there is the problem of machines going to sleep while running their assigned workflows. So unfortunately I have no fully working APFS solution yet – anyone have a solution to this problem, please contribute here:

Thanks!
