Will the new MacBook require Wireless Netboot ability?

Since Netboot over USB is already a no go,
and Apple is positioning more and more being Cloud required
(diagnostics for instance for the new Macbook will require
an Wireless Internet Connection),
will we be looking at wireless netbooting in the next ( two?) revs of DSS
to enable us to image the new MacBooks?

Re: Will the new MacBook require Wireless Netboot ability?

An Apple SE told me that the new MacBook supports Disk Target Mode over USB-C, so that is one option for imaging. Also, I was told by the same Apple SE that Netboot over Ethernet is possible, but it is unsupported (not sure what that means exactly). Apple's USB to Ethernet Adapter will allow gigabit Ethernet. Apparently a specific chipset enables the faster speed. You would also need the USB-C to USB Adapter.

try a thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter, I'd expect that would netboot (not tried it myself)

Nobody has tried imaging the new MacBook except for engineers at Apple. It is an unreleased product. Oh, and it doesn't have Thunderbolt! ;)

Re: Will the new MacBook require Wireless Netboot ability?

I don't know about the new model. But one of my clients has been NetBooting Wirelessly to Deploy Studio for quite a while. It helps to have a fast 802.11ac wireless router/access point. They were using an older model as their server. But if you have one of the new Macs, with built-in 802.11ac, that may be fine too.

The reason to do this, was that the number of Mac models that didn't have built-in Ethernet seemed to be increasing. And, at the time, we found that the wired netboot solution was model dependent. Some would work with the USB to Ethernet adapter. Some with the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter. Some we just couldn't get to NetBoot wired at all.

Connected the USB-C to USB adapter with a USB to Ethernet adaptor.
The MacBook discovered the network connection and enabled it without me having to do anything.

I netbooted it successfully with a netboot set created from an Mid 2015 15" Retina MacBook Pro (forcetouch trackpad), and captured my MacBook image successfully (pending another MacBook to image..).

So far, so good.
