Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

Hi all,

The checkbox "Restore system recovery partitions" is checked, but on the Fusion Drive iMacs, when logging into iCloud, I always see the dialog that warns "Find My Mac is not available because a recovery partition is required."

I create my images on a regular hard disk iMac and the image is applied to both iMacs with regular HDDs and with Fusion Drives (different workflow to take care of the FD-creation, though).

Any ideas how the recovery pieces can be correctly installed on FD iMacs?

Cheers,

-Christian

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

Having the same issue, i cant create a working fusion drive workflow.
our OS DMG's contain the recovery partition (made with AutoDMG)  checking restore the recovery partition makes the macintosh HD unbootable (doesnt show up in startup disks) and unchecking it will result in the same, only the recovery HD available.
Honestly i have no clue how to solve this.

Ok, DSS doesn't process the recovery partition disk image included in the autodmg disk image.

Fair enough.

The strange thing is, every non fusion drive recovery works with the autodmg images, also, about a year back i had fusion drive working with a recovery hd present in the image with no problems.

How should we set up a fusiondrive workflow and restore both the OS and Recovery HD ?

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

What I did is using a recovery image from an image created after a clean install of 10.10.1, and duplicate this, and renamed it to match the name of the image created by AutoDMG , ending in ....recovery.dmg in stead of ....hfs.dmg
Do this only with exactely the same version os OS X!!

I'm not exactly sure how that would work ?

The AutoDMG image would still contain the recovery HD right ?

My issue is that an AutoDMG image (which contains the recovery HD) will not restore in a fusion drive workflow, it attempts to restore, but after restoration only the recovery HD shows up and the macintosh HD is not there.
Doesnt matter wether the option for the recovery HD is checked or not.

Does AutoDMG support Fusion drive targets?

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

AutoDMG neither does nor doesn't - it just lets Apple's installer create a system image, and the installer decides to add a recovery partition to the image. Afterwards AutoDMG converts the image to read only and performs an asr scan.

We've successfully used AutoDMG images in DeployStudio with Fusion drives on 10.8 and 10.9 (barring a few known DS issues over the years), but with 10.10 asr fails on both Fusion drives and machines that ship with CoreStorage. Our workaround has been to add a partition step to the workflow and recreate the CoreStorage volume afterwards.

I would love it if AutoDMG images could support CoreStorage restores with less friction, if you have suggestions or want to discuss it please let me know.

Hi MagerValp.

I've deployed AutoDMG images of 10.10 from a 10.10 OS using both Disk Utility and Casper Imaging to CoreStorage (but not Fusion Drive) Macs without any issues.

What sort of issues are you having?

Mager, could you explain the workflow setup a little more please?

Sure, I'm just using the built in steps:

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

Magervalp, those images do not show use of the Fusion workflow element.. Are you using scripts to do some of the same things instead?

I got bitten by trying to restore an image to "first disk selected" assuming it would mean what I thought it would on a machine with a fusion drive ;)
Now I name the fusion volume and explicitly restore to it in the next workflow step.

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

Right, this is our workflow for regular machines that come with CoreStorage, but the principle is the same for Fusion drives.

Re: Still Recovery Partition troubles on iMacs with Fusion Drive

With a 10.10.2 NBI and a 10.10.2 image generated with AutoDMG I can successfully restore to a CoreStorage volume using DS 1.6.12, with no need to partition first. Can anyone else confirm?
